Volunteers
Pippa in the shop
Here is Pippa Parker, one of our regular volunteers, working in the shop. She enjoys keeping things tidy, and loves the friendly atmosphere.

Volunteers are the life blood of our Museum. A dedicated band of some 50 local volunteers give their time and expertise to make sure the Museum operates efficiently. There is no job they cannot do, and each individual's skills can be fully utilised in a Museum such as ours.

Spring is the beginning of the new Museum year, and annual training days are used to introduce new volunteers and update the regulars.

So what exactly can a volunteer do?
  • Serve refreshments
  • Act as a Guide
  • Demonstrate the knitting machines
  • Clean the buildings
  • Keep the garden tidy
  • Catalogue the multitude of documents
  • Research a particular project
  • Make new signs
  • Etc. etc...
Whatever your skill the Museum will find a use for it.

Some volunteers work regularly on a particular day and others are called in for specific projects. There are volunteers who do their work as and when convenient - looking through relevant archives etc.

The Volunteer Co-ordinator plans all the work in conjunction with the Site Manager to ensure that the Museum can meet all its commitments.

Volunteering is not a lifetime commitment - people come and go - and new volunteers are sought and made very welcome. Being part of this successful community enterprise, developing new skills or making use of existing ones, and meeting a wide range of fascinating people can be very rewarding.
