Research
The Museum encourages both amateur and professional research into the history of the site and the operation of the framework knitting industry in the nineteenth century and beyond. Previous projects have included :
-
a major study of the evolution of the framework knitting machine by Peta Lewis
-
the collection of oral history tapes
-
the history of the Parker family
-
links between Methodism and framework knitting
-
the role of framework knitters in pioneering the co-operative movement
-
the recreation of openwork patterns found in knitters notebooks
Students
Every effort is made to assist serious students and researchers by providing access to the Library and special collections. We do, however, require an initial introduction from the student's course or project supervisor.
Training
Individual one-to-one tuition on either framework knitting machines or Griswold-type circular sock machines can be arranged, and, on occasion training day courses for sock knitters on Griswold-type machines may be arranged, according to demand. Fees are by negotiation - with discounts possible if students are willing to put their new-found skills at the service of the Museum.
