RUDDINGTON FRAMEWORK KNITTERS’ MUSEUM

RESEARCH LIBRARY

Researchers into the history of the knitted textile industry can now access a new facility for research – The Smirfitt Library The Library was dedicated in honour of Jack Smirfitt, for forty years the Librarian at HATRA, and for his last fifteen years the Hon. Curator at the Museum.

The Library holds copies of all the major classic works on the framework knitting and hosiery industries, together with complete runs of trade journals, house magazines, copies of academic research, histories of hosiery firms, confidential consultants’ and market research organisations’ reports, plus various pamphlets and government reports. As the repository of much of the former HATRA library, it has a full set of HATRA Research Reports. It also includes works in a variety of languages, from Japanese to Russian and, as a result of frequent visits to firms about to close down, original documents and other ephemeral material. All this is supplemented by some historic archive film footage.

The Library, which is a reference library only, is available to researchers by appointment, from Wednesday to Friday 11am to 4pm, at the Ruddington Framework Knitters Museum, Chapel Street, Ruddington, Nottingham NG11 6HE, UK
