Katy Shore-Kapsis e-mails :
“I (and a group of 8 people) are researching the Shore family of Sutton in Ashfield, Notts (and villages in the area). A number of the group have been to your museum and said it was very interesting. A large number of the early Shore family were frame work knitters and we even have a will dated 1809 - which mentions a "stocking frame", being left to the family. Recently we have found that one of the Family a George Shore went to Jersey, had a son over there and later returned back to Sutton in Ashfield (before 1816 as his next son was born in 1816 in Sutton). Would you know why our ancestor would travel all the way to Jersey in the late 1700s early 1800s and then return again? I assume it is all connected with work in the frame knitting arena? I have read in the 1840s times were hard, but I thought the late 1700s early 1800s a frame work knitter was living comfortably (relatively)?
Michelle Woltman e-mails from New Zealand :
I am excited to have come across your website. My great great grandfather Richard Gee was a framework knitter from Ruddington. I have obtained the original census for 1841 but had no idea what FWK meant! Did all families who worked here live nearby? I hope to one day come to Ruddington to research more about the Gee and Kemp families.
Sonia Eley e-mails :
Have visited your site and in particular the list of workers. It may seem a strange request but would you be able to tell me if Thos. Isaac Birkin and his family of Lace Manufacturers who are listed as living at the Grange - could this be the Grange that was situated in Radcliffe on Trent?
Janine Toulson e-mails :
I am related somewhere to William Lee of Calverton. All the Lees were from Calverton. I have a lot of info on my family tree but could do with more if anyone could help.
John Carter e-mails:
I'm currently researching my 4th great grandfather, William CARTER bc1771 (possibly in Ruddington), and his son, also called William, bc1804 in Nottingham. Both Williams were framework knitters, with William junior being apprenticed to his father. I'm interested to learn more of the work that framework knitting entailed and the conditions that my ancestors lived & worked in. I would be grateful if you could recommend some books or other sources of information. Also could you advise if there would there be any records of framework knitters around that time; for example were there any associations or co-operatives that William CARTER might have belonged to where records survive? Any information that you can provide would be much appreciated.
